Note - This is a story I wrote in 1996 when I discovered the alt.religion.scientology newsgroup (mostly populated by critics of the movement) The story is still valid today, but since then I pretty much dissociated myself with the anti-Scientology movement because I disagree with their exaggerations and the cultish way they attack dissenters within their own rank.c
I was in England, at Saint Hill, when the 'Dianetic Clear' and the 'New Era Dianetic for OT' 'advent' broke out. For a while, the enthusiasm and exhilaration in the group was high, with hundreds of people finding that, after all, if the Dianetic (Dn) process didn't work for them till now, it wasn't because something was wrong with themselves or with the Dn processes, but because they already achieved the state of 'Clear'. Maybe they went 'Dianetic Clear' clear during some Dn processes, without realizing it, or without being recognized, or maybe they were already 'Natural Clear’. My estimate is that about 60 to 80% of students and staff at the time, maybe even more, came about this 'realization'. In the service in which I worked, for example, out of approximately 12 people, only two, me and another idiot, didn't come up to this conclusion. It was a bit annoying, because Dn clear was then such a fashion.
Some friend of mine gave me some hint. She said that she would 'run' the pictures in sessions, but that the pictures were not 'real', she would 'mock up' these because she was not supposed not to have engrams. That's how she came to the realization that she was really a natural clear. Well, the pictures I would run in my own sessions weren't that real either, but still I didn't jump to conclusions. I guess I expected something much more dramatic for such an highly acclaimed spiritual state as Clear. It seemed that no one was considering the possibility that if the pictures presented in sessions weren't real it was simply because Dn doesn't work the way it was supposed to. And what about the proposition that being a 'clear' is itself but just a 'mock up'?
It seems that with time, the level of expectation of a Scientologist would decline. You can’t get a Ferrari, so you go for a Mercedes, etc, until? In the same wake, I was proposed to review downward my understanding of 'exterior'. It happened while I was recalling, on the meter, some high experiences I had a few days before. It was then kindly suggested to me that I was then exterior, and asked if I didn't saw things from 'an higher perspective' (physically). I thought “is that all what is meant by being exterior?”. I understand that there may be some truth in the fact that one is, in those cases, slightly 'exterior'. Nevertheless, 'exterior', for me, is really to be exterior, clearly out of the body. Not a whishi washi subjective interpretation. A real clear-cut exteriorization experience happened to me later, but after I was out of the group and not as a result of Scn training or auditing. On the contrary, the whole process was much closer to the esoteric interpretation than to the few hints to be found in Scn about the subject.
Then there was this thing about the 'NED for OT'. The first persons, a couple, having received these processes arrived in Saint Hill and gave a general lecture to break up the news that before the advent of NED for OT, it maybe didn't quiet worked the way we expected it, but *now* LRH made it, *now* is the *real* thing here. During the lecture, they mentioned that, before NED for OT, they thought that all the OT stories they read in Advance magazines happened to all OTs except themselves. A huge laugh got hold of the crowd that lasted several minutes. Obviously, the lecturers were not the only ones to think this way, and obviously every one kept, until now, this thought for himself. It was only with NED for OT that LRH allowed them to express it, within conditions, that is.
I had the opportunity to have a private lecture right after, because the lecturers were friends of people with whom I was sharing the house and the couple was invited over. During the discussion that followed, the same phenomenon aroused. One of the house inhabitant said that she went back on OT3 after finishing all the levels, because despite the fact that she initially had big wins, these seemed to be long gone. So she was running some more OT3 stuff but seemed to go just round and round. She didn't dare to go back to her country because the 'product' wasn't there. This was an honest statement, but that would come out only because of the circumstances and because of the exceptional presence of these people from whom she hoped to receive some wise council (she only received a NED for OT smile though).
Around this period, I was already in an advanced state of 'heretic' thinking. I had serious doubts about this other new 'definitive breakthrough'. I read about so many LRH 'definitive breakthrough' in the past that I was expecting soon to be asked to redefine my interpretation of 'definitive' as well. And since I started to develop my theory of Scn endless rationalization, I was also watching with interest the turn of events. But the interesting part with the advent of NED and NED for OT, is that it revealed even more clearly that 1-the results were not there, and 2-there was an auto-censure going on in which people were afraid to reveal, even sometimes to themselves, that the results were indeed lacking.
The NED or NED for OT of course didn't change anything, and any new future 'miracle' solution won't either. As long as the cultic context of Scn isn't tackled with, any 'change' will be confined within its own limits. A new wallpaper for the jail.
