in ARS

The following table has no lengthy description. It only lists regular participants by category: whether they are critics or Scientologist, ex-members or not. I don't know everybody as I am only reading ARS sporadically these days, and so have placed names I see often but don't know about in the "unknown" category. When a poster is not American, I mention his nationality (when I know it). I also mention if something is very special about this poster (for example journalist). I do not make value judgment about the posters, except maybe to decide in which category he fits. When the poster is known by other names, I mention this too, but I do not "out" people (mention their name when they didn't volunteer it themselves). While I try to be objective, the list is mostly based on my opinion, and I don't always know everything (for example if someone is an ex-member or not). The list is in alphabetical order, more or less as you would see it if you make a sort by name in the newsgroup. Posters who didn't post for a long time are in gray. Links go to pages on this website. One last thing, don't always automatically trust that the person using a name is the real person as trolls are possible.

Here are a few words of explanation about each category:

  • Critics: These are people who clearly identify themselves as critics. They usually don't position themselves against other critics, even though they may disagree between themselves occasionally. When I know that the critic is an ex-member, I mention this, but I do not consider as ex-members those who simply did a Scientology course for a short while or worked as outsiders for front groups.

  • Scientologists: I use the denomination the person himself is using. I do NOT call someone a Scientologist simply because he disagrees with critics. I also don't call a Scientologist someone who is clearly a Freezoner.

  • Outsiders: In this category, I place those who ARE critics of the CoS but who also clearly stand against the abuses of other critics. I place myself in this category. Needless to say, I consider this as the most interesting and the least biased category.

  • Freezoners: Scientologists who have quit the official Church but are continuing to practice the "tech" on their own. I have put there a few who were not Scientologists but are mostly interested in the technical aspects rather than the critical aspects.

As one can see, the number of participants who are critics far outweight the number of other participants (though I probably forgot a few which I will add as I remember them).
